Harlene Lee

Harlene Lee

When Harlene Lee was a young girl growing up in Ravenna, Ohio, her parents couldn't keep her off the ice. Ice skating was her passion. A 1951 graduate of Hiram College, Harlene majored in speech, and with teaching credentials in hand, she taught elementary school for several years.

But her passion for ice skating and keeping physically active propelled Harlene into the dawn of the international ice skating discipline of ice dancing where she was a true pioneer. Long before ice dancing was the popular Olympic sport of today, Harlene and her ice dancing partner set the ice on fire with their intricate ice dancing routines. Harlene and her partner were invited guests to tour with the U.S. World Team for five years. They also skated in many other events that supported the USFSA Memorial Fund started by her partner F. Ritter Shumway. This tour honors our U.S. team that was lost in an plane crash over Brussels, Belgium in 1961.They also skated in two special shows for the King and Queen of Sweden and President and Mrs. Gerald Ford.

Harlene is a triple Gold dance test medalist of the United States, Canada and the ISU International. She continued skating until just a few years ago.

Harlene has always believed in the importance of staying physically active and living a healthy life style. That is why she has included Hiram College in her estate plan. She has planned a gift that will endow a program in student health and wellness. The Harlene Lee Endowment for Healthy Living will provide Hiram College with the means to support nutrition education, provide programs on healthy lifestyles, and promote activities designed to instill lifelong commitments to health and wellbeing in Hiram College students.

"I see so many young people who obviously are not eating right and exercising enough. It is important that our young people learn the habits of health and wellness as early as possible. These habits will enhance all aspects of their lives for many years."

Forward thinking alumni like Harlene Lee can make a difference in the lives of Hiram students for generations.
