A Family Affair

Sisters Gwen Gibbs Kingzett '53 and Pat Gibbs Shanower '50 come from a long line of Gibbs family members who attended Hiram College. At one time, Pat counted 19 members of the family who followed in the Hiram tradition, including her daughter, Paula Shanower Coleman '76.

Attending Hiram might have been inevitable for Pat and Gwen, given the family tradition, but meeting their future husbands might not have been. Pat met Donald Shanower, a graduate of Kent State University, on the famed Hiram Showboat, the summer the Showboat was being transferred from Kent State to Hiram. And Gwen met Hiram sports legend Bill Kingzett '53 on campus. The Gibbs/Shanower/Kingzett clans have been loyal supporters of Hiram for generations, donating to the Hiram Fund, the Earle and Winnifred Gibbs Endowed Scholarship established by their parents, and the Ellen Gibbs Library Fund, among other Hiram projects.

Pat and Don established a Charitable Gift Annuity which will eventually provide additional funds for the College but is right now distributing a steady stream of income to Pat and Don. Gwen and Bill established a Charitable Remainder Unitrust that provides annual income based on the value of the assets each year. When the trust terminates it will provide assets for Hiram College athletic facilities and the Gibbs funds.
